About

We are the UNSW RoboCup Soccer Standard Platform League team, where we program robots to play soccer against other teams autonomously. But we don’t just make robots play soccer. We are on the cutting edge of AI and robotics research. We are in the RoboCup Soccer Standard Platform League, meaning that everyone in our RoboCup league uses the same Nao V6 humanoid robots - so it's a competition of brains.

We are after passionate students who can dedicate consistent time to the project every week. The competition has a standard platform, so you will work with the NAO robots – most of the development is software but we have a range of opportunities and areas to get involved in. The easiest way you can show us you know how to develop robotics software is by completing the robotics course COMP3431, but this isn’t a requirement. We run some challenges when recruiting to get you familiar with the codebase, but a big chunk of this is joining the discord and following our ! Pop over to our  to show us your work and ask any questions!

Ideally we recruit students who have at least one year left on their degree as it does take some time to get familiar with the code and make some meaningful contributions. If you’ve been with us for a year, there’s even the opportunity to do your thesis with us!

Being a member of rUNSWift takes a large amount of time and effort but is hugely rewarding. You get the opportunity to work on a university project that competes internationally and it’s a great chance to practically apply your studies in a meaningful way. Not only that but you get to make some good friends along the way, with many teams remaining good friends long after their time at RoboCup.

We usually recruit members from Term 3-Term 1 as the project gets more intensive in the lead up to the RoboCup international competition in the middle of the year. You could work on areas of our codebase such as vision, motion, tooling, behaviours, system architecture, localisation, communication, robot maintenance and even our socials!
