Do YOU want to build off-world rovers, launch high altitude balloons and design ground stations that will reach the stars? Then Bluesat is for you!

About Bluesat

Formed in 1997, Bluesat is the UNSW student space engineering projects society and one of the oldest project groups on campus! Bluesat offers unique opportunities for students to pursue space projects and challenge their engineering skills through practical experience.

Bluesat has pursued a variety of projects in its 27 year history, from the original BLUEsat (Basic Low-earth-orbit UNSW Experimental satellite) in the 90s and the designs that followed, to our high-altitude balloons seeking to bridge the gap between the land and space from 2012 onwards!

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 4: Quality Education

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Current Projects:

High-Altitude Balloon:

Bluesat’s High-Altitude Balloon project seeks to provide a test platform for the evaluation of satellite hardware without the costs associated with orbital and suborbital rocket launches.

Off-World Robotics:

The Off-World Robotics project is set to compete in the  in 2025! This competition focuses on the development of a lunar rover which will complete a variety of tasks remotely; from typing on a keyboard, to sampling and analysing regolith for signs of life!

Ground Station:

Satellites are constantly transmitting data to earth; whether detailing their operational status, sending live images of our planet or universe or analysing solar winds. This is where ground stations come in. The Bluesat Ground Station project aims to maintain a communications link for unencrypted satellite transmissions and our High-Altitude Balloon.

See our website for more information!

  • Passionate, self-driven students with a desire to learn and gain hands on experience with space related engineering projects.
  • Students from all years and disciplines.
  • Be part of a team! Bluesat currently has over 50 members focused on the development and management of our projects.
  • Gain practical experience! Learn how to apply your course knowledge to large scale engineering projects and work with others in a team.
  • Explore the Australian space industry! Bluesat has been invited to industry events including the 16th Australian Space Forum and the Avalon Airshow! These have been excellent opportunities for our members to make connections with future employers.

Conditions apply to receive Non-Traditional Industrial training for Student Projects. You will need to apply ()  for this Project before you commence so the days can count towards your Industrial Training (IT) program requirement (maximum 30 days).  Being a member of a Student Project does not guarantee that you will receive a Non-Traditional IT placement and should not be the only motivating factor for joining a team.
