BIOGRAPHY

Dereje is an optometrist and public health professional from Ethiopia. Currently he is pursuing his PhD study in SOVS, studying the economic impacts of rare and very severe contact lens complication so called Acanthamoeba keratitis. His career success was through the clinical optometry services, training both under and post graduate optometry and ophthalmology students and research works. He published all his research products on reputable internation journals. Throughout his 12 years of working experiences, he engaged himself in community services and voluntary activities at national and organizational levels. Dereje is living his passion by upgrading his career and now he is at level of studying the PhD program.Ìý

Research AbstractÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare but a severe and blinding corneal infection. The common treatment of AK includes dual therapy by PHMB 0.02% and Propamidine 0.1%. Recently, the study conducted by UCL and SIFI, revealed that monotherapy by PHMB 0.08 has shorter cure times than common PHMB and propamidine dual therapy.

As it is a new product, there will be economic costs associated at the individual and societal level. Conversely, this product will be expected to improve the health and vision related quality of life of patients affected with AK. Analysing PHMB 0.08%’s economic impact and Ìýits effectiveness in terms of quality adjusted life years over periods of time has a paramount importance in using the new regimen.

The study design includes quantitative, qualitative, and triangulated design (combinations of both). Data from prior studies and prospectively for patients who are treated by both treatment choices will be collected on a longitudinal basis. The direct, indirect treatment costs and societal costs will be evaluated, and health utility score will be determined over hypothetical cohort series. Quality adjusted life years and incremental cost effectiveness ratio/utility ratio will be calculated to determine how much QALYs will be gained for both monotherapy and dual therapy.Ìý
